Video Link Safety: A Practical Guide

Links are the internet’s circulatory system — and its attack surface. A practical safety guide for clicking video links.

Read the URL before you click

Hover (or long-press) every link. The displayed text lies; the href doesn’t. Look for the real destination domain at the end of any redirect chain, and beware of lookalike domains (youtubee, tiktokk).

Expand shorteners

bit.ly, tinyurl, and their shady clones hide destinations. Use an expander or append "+" to bit.ly links to preview. If a video link needs hiding, ask why.

Count the redirects

One redirect (shortener → destination) is normal. Three or more means monetization chain — each hop is someone getting paid for your click. Bail out.

Watch for download injections

Any page in the chain offering a file download is the trap. Close it. Legitimate video pages never bundle downloads with viewing.

Use platform search instead

The fastest safe route to any viral video: search its title directly on TikTok, YouTube, or Instagram. Skip the aggregator entirely — you’ll find it faster and safer.
